Dear Friends of Jamii,

You are all aware of the recent violence that took place in Kenya, which has left many people in deep pain and suffering.  Among the displaced are our own children from the Jamii center in Kibera.  Kibera was at the center of the violence because it is one of the strongholds of the leader of the opposition. Many of the children experienced severe trauma; some saw their guardians killed and their houses burned.  The children and their guardians took shelter at Nairobi’s Jamuhuri park where they have been since December 30th 2007.   The children are receiving counseling and we have found shelter for many of them in orphanages or children’s homes that were willing to accommodate them until the security situation normalizes or until we arrange for permanent housing for them.

However, out of the many chilren that we have been taking care for the last four years, there are a few still remaining. at the fairgrounds.  These children have not gone back to school even though schools reopened in mid-January and they have no hope of going back to school so long as they are staying at the fairgrounds. We continue to support them while they are at the fairgrounds through our feeding program, but we do not have the capacity to provide them with instruction.

We are therefore appealing to our friends, supporters and well wishers to partner with us in establishing a scholarship fund for the children to enable them to attend boarding schools until we rebuild our center. For the long term, we have identified land that we plan to purchase and we will start building a new center at a location removed from Kibera as soon as we have the resources to begin the project.
