Join Jamii International Outreach Ministries on its fourth annual safari-mission trip, tentatively scheduled for September 11th to 27th, 2008. During our 16-day tour, we will spend a few days at the Jamii-Kenya centers, interacting with the children and volunteers, helping to prepare and serve food at the feeding center, and participating in activities with the children including field trips to local tourist attractions. The trip will also feature a 6 hour safari drive to see one of Kenya’s most spectacular game reserves at Nakuru National Park.

Tentative Itinerary:

Day 1: WASHINGTON, DC – NAIROBI
Depart on KLM Airways on Thursday, change planes in Amsterdam, and arrive in Nairobi on Friday evening.

Day 2: NAIROBI – KIBERA
After checking into the residence, resting, and eating lunch, we will drive to the Jamii center in Kibera for a welcoming ceremony at 1300 hours. We will meet the orphans, participate in a short worship service, and will be entertained by the Jamii volunteers and children. We will assist in serving the children an early dinner before departing back to our residence at 5:00 pm to rest and eat dinner.

Day 3: NAIROBI – KIBERA
9:00 am – We will depart from the residence for Sunday morning services at the Jamii center (optional). After the services end, we will enjoy a picnic lunch with the children and the children will be divided into small groups for activities with tour participants. Tour participants will be assigned a small group of children and will be asked to prepare age-appropriate small group activities to enjoy with the children. The bus will depart at 5:00 pm hours in time to return to the residence for dinner.

 

Day 4: NAIROBI – NAKURU
8:00 am- From Nairobi, take a 2.5 hour drive to Nakuru. passing through the Great Rift Valley, and Lake Naivasha. We'll relax at the residence before lunch is served at 1:00 pm. At 3:00 pm we'll join the children in a welcome ceremony and entertainment by Jamii Nakuru volunteers and children. We will assist in serving the children an early dinner before departing back to our residence.

Day 5: NAKURU – GAME DRIVE
After breakfast, we will join the children and go for a game drive at Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru lies in the Great Rift Valley and is known world wide because it is a sanctuary for flamingoes. There are over a million flamingoes along its shores. A picnic lunch is served after the drive. Nakuru National Park offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded there. We will easily see lions, rhinos (white rhinos), hippos, crocodiles, giraffe, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, leopards and many kinds of antelope.

Day 6: NAKURU
After breakfast we will visit Nakuru town and go shopping and sight seeing. After lunch we head back to our residence and start packing for Nairobi. In the afternoon we will meet with the volunteers and the children and have a gift exchange ceremony before we head to Nyahururu Jamii center.

Day 7: NYAHURURU
We'll arrive at the Jamii children's center in Nyahururu and have a welcome ceremony. After the ceremony we'll help serve the children dinner. 

Day 8: NYAHURURU
After breakfast we'll take the kids on a field trip to Nyahururu town to the famous Thompson’s Falls. This is a spectacular 260 foot waterfall that is a big tourist attraction. After visiting the falls we will have lunch before heading back to the center. Dinner will be served early and then we will have a campfire and fellowship.

Day 9: NYAHURURU
We will volunteer to work with the staff at the center on various projects.

Day 10: NYERI
After breakfast we will do some local hiking to the Abadare Range Mountains. Those that won’t be able to go for the hike will go to Nyahururu and take a tour of the town. We'll leave in the afternoon for Nyeri where we will visit projects run by our sister organization the Lydia Watani Foundation.

Day 11: Embu
After breakfast we will have a scenic drive to Embu with stop-overs at Mea Tabere irrigation scheme, the famous Thagana River and Thika town before reaching Nairobi. Dinner will be served at the residence.

Day 12: NAIROBI
After breakfast we will have a day off to relax and go to the city or stay at home and regenerate. In the evening we go into the city for dinner.

Day 13: NAIROBI
During the morning you will be free to walk around Nairobi and shop. At 12:00 pm a bus will depart for an optional tour of Karen, where you will have the opportunity to tour the Karen Blixen museum (made famous by the movie “Out of Africa”), with a stop at the famous Kizuri bead factory. At 5:00 pm the bus will return to Nairobi for dinner.

Day 14: NAIROBI – KIBERA
9:00 am - depart for Kibera to take the children to visit the Bomas of Kenya, a local attraction that has examples of traditional homes of the various tribes of Kenya, followed by dancing and performances typical of the country’s major tribes. The all-day trip will include a picnic lunch with the children and the exchange of gifts. After dropping the children in Kibera, we will proceed to the Carnivore Restaurant for a dinner of fresh game meat (vegetarian entrees also available).

Day 15: NAIROBI – WASHINGTON, DC
9:00 am - depart the hotel for Kibera to participate in the morning service and the closing/farewell ceremony. We will return to the hotel by 1:00 pm for lunch and to give guests a few hours to freshen up and do any last-minute shopping before departing for the airport. We will leave for the airport at 8:00 pm for our flight that departs at 11:00 pm.

Day 16: WASHINGTON, DC
2:00 pm - arrive at Washington Dulles International Airport

There might be changes to the itinerary depending on the day’s schedule. Any changes will be communicated in advance. The total expense for the trip is $3500.00.

*Price per-person is based on double-occupancy. The single-occupancy surcharge is $600, payable by August 20, 2008.

• Transportation in and around Nairobi to all attractions
• Accommodations in Nairobi and Nakuru
• Dinner at Nairobi’s Carnivore Restaurant
• Transportation from Nairobi to Nakuru & back
• Service of an English-speaking driver guide
• Driver allowances and park fees for vehicle & driver
• Government taxes.

Excludes:

• Lunches and most dinners in Nairobi
• Admissions to attractions in and around Nairobi
• Extras, including tips, drinks, telephone, laundry, or other personal expenses
• Park fees.

Cancellation Policy:

The $500 deposit is fully tax-deductible and non-refundable. Refunds will be provided depending on the date of the cancellation, as detailed below.

June 20, — 100% Monthly payments refunded
July 20, — 75% Monthly payments refunded
August 20, — 50% Monthly payments refunded
After August 20, — 25% Monthly payments refunded.
